git-commit: Claude Code Skill & Agent Tool
An open-source skill by github (opens in a new tab), published in the github/awesome-copilot (opens in a new tab) repository on GitHub. Your git assistant: stages related files together and writes Conventional Commits messages from the diff, detecting type and scope automatically, with optional overrides when you want control.

What this skill does
git-commit turns your AI agent into a careful git assistant. When you ask it to commit, it reads the staged diff — or the working tree when nothing is staged — and checks git status to understand what actually changed. It then groups related files, stages them, and writes a message that follows the Conventional Commits specification: a type such as feat, fix, docs, refactor or chore, an optional scope, and a short description in the imperative mood, with a body and footers when the change needs them.
Type and scope are detected automatically from the changes, and you can override either one whenever you want control. Breaking changes are flagged with an exclamation mark or a BREAKING CHANGE footer, so changelogs and release tooling keep working.
The skill also follows a strict safety protocol: it never edits your git configuration, never runs force pushes or hard resets unless you ask explicitly, never skips hooks, and when a hook rejects a commit it fixes the problem and creates a new commit instead of amending. That makes it safe to use with Claude Code on shared repositories.

How to use with Claude Code & AI Agents
Install the skill
Run the command above at the root of your project. The CLI asks which agents to set up — Claude Code, Cursor and other supported agents — and adds git-commit to the project, so teammates who pull the repository get it too. Add-gto install it for your user account across every project.Open a new agent session
Start a fresh Claude Code session in that project so the agent loads the new skill. Have ready: Git.Ask in plain words
Describe the task, for example:“Commit my changes with a proper conventional commit message.”The agent matches your request to the skill's description and follows its SKILL.md instructions step by step. Read them on GitHub before using the skill on a system that matters.
