mcp-builder: Claude Code Skill & Agent Tool
An open-source skill by mcp-use (opens in a new tab), published in the mcp-use/mcp-use (opens in a new tab) repository on GitHub. Build, debug, migrate and review TypeScript MCP servers and MCP Apps with the mcp-use framework: tools, resources, prompts, authentication and middleware.

What this skill does
mcp-builder is the official skill of mcp-use, a TypeScript framework for building Model Context Protocol servers and MCP Apps. Use it whenever your agent needs to build, modify, debug, migrate, review or verify an MCP server: tools, resources, prompts, middleware, interactive Views, authentication or Skills over MCP.
It starts from facts rather than memory. The agent inspects package.json, the server entry, exported tool references and the installed mcp-use version, treating the installed package and its types as the source of truth. New projects are scaffolded with create-mcp-use-app, and the agent reads only the references the task needs — server, Views, authentication with OAuth providers, Skills over MCP, advanced features such as OpenAPI and elicitation, migration and verification.
A short list of core invariants keeps servers correct: tool arguments declared with an input schema, output schemas and structured content for every View-bound tool, raw MCP result envelopes, and request-scoped identity instead of module globals. Guardrails forbid invented exports, claiming success from a build alone, or deploying anything without your explicit request. Use it with Claude Code to ship an MCP server that behaves correctly in every host.
Key Capabilities
- Builds tools, resources, prompts, middleware and interactive Views
- Treats the installed mcp-use version and its types as the source of truth
- Scaffolds new projects with create-mcp-use-app
- References for OAuth authentication, Skills over MCP, OpenAPI and elicitation
- Guardrails: no invented APIs, real verification before done, no unrequested deploys
How to use with Claude Code & AI Agents
Install the skill
Run the command above at the root of your project. The CLI asks which agents to set up — Claude Code, Cursor and other supported agents — and adds mcp-builder to the project, so teammates who pull the repository get it too. Add-gto install it for your user account across every project.Open a new agent session
Start a fresh Claude Code session in that project so the agent loads the new skill. This skill needs no extra tool or API key.Ask in plain words
Describe the task, for example:“Build an MCP server with mcp-use that exposes our orders API as tools.”The agent matches your request to the skill's description and follows its SKILL.md instructions step by step. Read them on GitHub before using the skill on a system that matters.
